Pneumonia :(

Last night, just before bed, I started mixing up an overnight muffin recipe to bake in the morning.  All the ingredients were out on the counter and I was looking over the new recipe when that little, hard-to-ignore voice piped up.
"Hey, I think maybe you should just forget about the muffins for tonight."
"Why? I have to try out this recipe anyway.  I don't care if it flops, tonight's good."

I argue with myself like this a lot.  I'm pretty sure it's on the safe side of schizophrenia.  Mostly sure.... But that little voice was persistent.
"Just the same, I think you should forget about it for tonight."
"I already got everything out, so I'm just going to do it, ok?"
"Ok, just thought I'd give you a head's up."

Lickety-split, I whipped up the mix, set it on the counter and crawled into bed a mere 45 minutes past my bed time.
If only I had known that what that little, persistent voice was trying to get through my thick skull was not "don't make those muffins because they won't turn out anyway" but rather "don't bother making those muffins because you're going to be at the hospital right about baking time tomorrow morning, and you're going to lose a lot of sleep tonight so go to bed early."
I wonder if there will ever be a point at which I hear that little voice, forego the questioning, and say
"You're right, I should go to bed. Thanks for the tip."
Given my track record, it could be quite a while.

Around 1:00 am, Gavin came out of his room crying that he needed to go to the bathroom.  I got him by the toilet, pulled down his jammies and pull-up when he started coughing up a lung.  The coughing, mixed with a full bladder, turned him into a 3-year old sprinkler system.  With each cough he was hitting the wall, the shower, my legs, then the wall again...  I hurried and got him on the toilet, dodging the stream long enough to point it down into the water.  That's when the puking started.  My poor boy, half-asleep and nearly coughing himself into the toilet, had the smarts to at least aim between his legs.  That sort of worked.  One hour later, we were showered and tucked in bed, coughing [temporarily] subsided.

4:00 am was more vomiting, more coughing, shallow breathing, and a rather panicked mom.  Troy worked late at the new house and had slept over there, so it was scarier that I didn't have his input.  at 5:30 I called the home teachers to come give Gavin a blessing, as he now had a fever as well.
I was so frustrated at not knowing what to do.  Gavin handles illness differently than a normal kid, and I didn't want to get all worked up about something that wasn't a big deal.  On the other hand, if he was not getting enough oxygen, that was a very big deal.  So finally, at 7:00, I took Aliyah to the neighbor's (thank you Janel!!!) and headed off for the hospital.
We're home now, with antibiotics, a nebulizer, and a fancy photo of Gavin's hazy lung tissue.  I think I'll hang it on the wall next to the one we got from last time.....
You know what I love about this limp-lunged kid?  That while he was laying on a bed in the hospital, with a nurse giving him medication and checking his sats, he smiled at me between coughs and said "Mom, that lady is really nice." then closed his eyes, and fell asleep.  That's my boy.

Happy I Love You Day!

The Fun-O-Meter at our house has dipped dangerously low these last few months since buying our new house.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel, since it will not take the rest of our entire lives to remodel this house, so we may have a shot at some kind of happiness again before we die.
Ok, so maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit, but when your beloved writes you a poem like this for Valentines, you know that life could really use a pick-me-up.

Especially, when that particular beloved spent a few hours of his precious Sunday off dealing with a water-spewing washing machine.  Technically, the only water oriented device in our basement that has yet to throw a fit and flood our space is the dishwasher.  This winter we’ve gone a total of about one month without some sort of flooding.
Needless to say, starting off our hip-happy day of love like this was not ideal…

So today the kids and I did our best to clean up the mess and make the place look nice for when our Knight in shining armor dragged himself home from work (did I mention he caught the sickness the kids and I tried so hard to avoid giving him?).  Without a car our options for decorations were sparse, but I think we did ok.
Valentines pillow cases doubled for chair covers, doilies became center pieces, and I even found some nice candles in our emergency preparedness kit (Hey, rescuing Valentines is definitely an emergency!).  All in all, I think things turned out alright.

(This picture is my favorite, because just as I was taking the picture, Gavin rushed in to strike his favorite Yoga pose.  How cute is that!  You should see his face, he is so serious!)
We ate strawberry pancakes with sausage and opened valentines from each other, our wonderful Grandma Carolyn, and my brothers in New York.  Poor Troy barely made it through the dishes before he passed out.  What could be sexier on Valentines than a dear, sweet husband who works himself nearly unconscious for the family he loves?  Happy Valentines day sweetie!

Suprise Sledding

Sunday we decided to take advantage of early church for the first time and head up to the cabin after our meetings. We packed dinner and treats, but no snow clothes (it was the Sabbath, after all...) and headed up to enjoy the sunshine. The problem with going to the cabin on a gorgeous snowy day is that I can't for the life of me understand why we don't go up there every day. It was seriously take-your-breath-away beautiful up there. Needless to say, snow clothes or no, we ended up doing some sledding. It felt so deliciously good to be outside in the sunshine on such a beautiful piece of mountain with my family. Hopefully we can do this again soon, and in water-resistant clothing next time :)
The snow is so high on the
deck, Aliyah climbed up on
the roof (with some help from
her Daddy...)

When the snow slides off the roof, it makes
this really cool ice tunnel on the deck.

Groovy boots James!

Now that's my kind of escalator!
Going down!

My Hubby, the pack-horse

Candy and Dave Hunter joined
in the fun too.

Sick.....Again

This is seriously the 3rd or 4th time the kids and I have gotten seriously ill this winter.  Seeeriously, if I have to be stuck in this basement with sick kids, sick self, and no car for another straight week this winter I am going to go insane.
Can't you just hear Heavenly Father chuckling right now, like "Insane? Really?  Hmm, well if one more week is all it takes...."
I'm doomed.
Really, we've done pretty well so far, kept busy as energy levels would allow and managed to have some fun.  Amidst fevers, coughs, snot, aches, and everything else unpleasant, we managed to:
Make some messes
And clean them up

Bake amazing Whole Wheat Apple Date Muffins

Get ourselves dressed
Sort of....

Make a few angels

Hunt dinosaurs

Bake some delicious bread

Find an indoor solution for
burning energy

Really though, one more week of fabricated entertainment will do me in.  I need a rest.  Or a vacation.  Or summer.  Yes please.
